Christian and Cleo are reflecting on their relationship woes as he prepares to return to America.

In PEOPLE’s exclusive sneak peek at Sunday’s episode of 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days, Christian admits that Cleo is “feeling pretty somber and sad” as he prepares to head back to America.

Cleo says that she had hoped to “kind of shut down” her emotions but breaks down in tears over his departure.

“You know this journey would have been a lot smoother but the situations that have cropped up that have been difficult — like my insecurities when you’re talking to single ladies at a bar — but I’m just holding on to the positives,” she tells Christian.

He agrees the pair still need to “process and decompress from [some arguments] because some of the things that happened are kind of a little bit like a dent in our relationship,” adding, “I think that trust is an issue that we have to work on.”

Cleo responds by saying that the status of their relationship “sounds pretty sucky.” She adds, “It sounds like our relationship is kinda scarred.”

“That’s how relationships go,” he explains. “They’re like, like in this analogy, they’re like cars, you know, you get in a little fender benders here and there but it’s not like anything that’s going to total the relationship.”

Cleo is still holding on to hope about their relationship, saying, “For me, the highs definitely overrides the lows because I feel like the highs have been really good…” before crying again.

“Okay, before you start crying, stop crying, because I don’t think that the negatives outweigh the positives at all,” he replies. “But it’s not necessarily like I can forget things that happened because if I forget the things that happened between us that weren’t as great, we’re not gonna be able to learn from anything.”

He adds, “We should be happy that we had a great time. And let’s just focus on that.”

The clip concludes with Cleo looking back on the relationship in a confessional.

“I’m aware that there have been difficulties and moments of awkwardness and misunderstanding,” she says. “However, as an autistic transgender person, I have faced a lot of rejection and external prejudice that cis people wouldn’t necessarily have to face.”
