Iain Maclean Addresses His “Terrible” Flirtation with Elena Dubaich
The Below Deck Med bosun had a hilarious reaction to flirting with the stew.
Is another romantic connection heating up on Below Deck Mediterranean Season 9? If you ask Iain Maclean, the answer might be yes, but if you ask Elena “Ellie” Dubaich, the answer is most definitely no.
Though Ellie has struck up a flirtation with deckhand Joe Bradley (who is also bonding with Bri Muller), she’s also caught the eye of Joe’s boss, Iain.
Iain tried flirting with Ellie during a crew night out on Season 9, Episode 7 (which aired on July 15), but it didn’t exactly end in a love match. On the July 15 episode of Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, host Andy Cohen asked Iain to defend his method of flirting with Ellie, but the Bosun wasn’t able to do so.
“That was just a terrible attempt, that’s all I’m gonna say,” Iain joked on the show.

Early on in Episode 7, Iain expressed his interest in the second stew. “I see Ellie and I’m like, ‘Wow, oh, wait, I’m doing a job,'” he shared in an interview on the episode. “I’ve been playing the long game. I think she’s starting to show interest. If anyone’s gonna make moves, it could be pretty soon.”
But, Ellie dashed Iain’s dreams when she was asked about their bond in an interview of her own.
“Does Iain have a shot with you?” a producer asked her.
“No,” Ellie bluntly responded.
Later on, when the crew went out, Iain sat down with Ellie one-on-one to talk about his feelings for her. “There’s a lot of people telling you you’re beautiful,” Iain said while the crew was out at a club. “I’m another one.”
How did Ellie respond to Iain’s “flirting”? She said, “Thank you.”
“I’m a person of few words,” she continued, and Iain replied, “Yeah, me too.”
“I’m a person of few words, but, also, like, I’m not connecting with everyone as much as I would like to because I’m thinking about so many other things,” he continued.
Ellie advised Iain to ask people questions, so he did.
“Well, if I said, ‘Were you interested in me?’ What would your direct answer be?” he wondered.
“I don’t think that’s the way to go about it,” Ellie candidly said.
In an interview, Iain shared his deep thoughts on the matter.
“Sh-t,” he said.
After chatting more and then returning to Mustique, Ellie reflected on her friendship with Iain.
“This is the last time I’m listening to Iain talking my ears off,” she said once she got back to her cabin.
