Blue Bloods Boss Shares Big Final Season Update For Tom Selleck’s Frank That Could Indicate How His Story Will End

Fourteen seasons could revolve around one big decision by Frank Reagan.

At this point, fans don’t know how or where the story in CBS’s long-running police drama Blue Bloods will end. All we know is that the upcoming 14th season will be the last. Delivering its final stories as part of the 2024 television schedule, the show will finally begin to tell the fate of the Reagan family, with a grand premiere in mid-February. And thanks to comments from showrunner Kevin Wade, there’s a big update that could indicate how the story will end for Tom Selleck’s Frank.

In an interview with TV Insider, the Blue Bloods big boss began talking about what to expect during a tense time for New York’s best law enforcement family. And, for Frank Reagan, the article covered everything from potential romance to a retirement that seemed to be in the plans. That last possibility appears to stem from developments between Commissioner Reagan and Dylan Walsh’s Mayor Peter Chase. Not only does Kevin Wade mention that this is where the mention of retirement comes from, but he also offers the following tidbit about this procedural opponent:

”…they also realized that they were both examples of ‘It’s lonely at the top. It was an interesting epiphany.”

What could make the CBS ecosystem’s top cop finally ready to enjoy life outside of uniform? Well, with the two-part release starting next month and concluding at some point this fall, there’s still plenty of time for Blue Bloods to throw in a few twists here and there.

Frank Reagan will certainly be busy thanks to his youngest son, Sgt. Jamie Reagan (Will Estes) begins Season 14 “undercover in a human trafficking ring.” That puts current police commissioner Frank in a difficult position, as any father in this job would be very worried. Speaking to that point and seemingly giving a plausible reason for why Commissioner Reagan might retire, Tom Selleck commented on the effect this storyline had on his character as follows:

“He realized he was interfering where he shouldn’t have interfered. Frank always struggled between his responsibilities as a trustee and his responsibilities as a parent.”

So can Frank Reagan end his 14-year storyline to stabilize his career and quit the game? It certainly seems like a strong possibility, and it mirrors what is said to be Tom Selleck’s post-Blue Bloods plans. It’s just that it’s hard to imagine Frank trading the mean streets of New York for an avocado farm.

Speculation couldn’t run higher, as even something as simple as Donnie Wahlberg’s set of photos of one of the Reagan family’s last dinners caused loyal viewers to miss the show. It’s only been a few months since Blue Bloods fans shared their final feelings, one can’t blame them. Especially when there’s a chance that not everyone will be able to sit at the dinner table when the long-running series enjoys its last meal.

Blue Bloods will begin its final act when Season 14 premieres on Friday, February 16 at 10pm ET, only on CBS. Fans looking to catch up on Season 13 or anyone curious about watching the series for the first time should subscribe to Paramount+; because that platform was the sole home of all 13 previous seasons.
