Abigail Hawk credits Blue Bloods for everything she knows about acting

Abigail Hawk has racked up an impressive list of her film credits, including “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” and “Reality Check.” Her most important role, however, was as one of three council members serving Police Commissioner Frank Reagan (Tom Selleck) in “Blue Bloods.” After nearly 250 episodes as detective Abigail Baker, the actress has become one of the highlights of the series. And according to her, she learned everything she knows about acting from her time on set.

In an interview with Hamptons, Hawk addressed what it means to be a part of “Blue Bloods.” “It’s very special,” she said. “I feel like I’ve almost become a woman in this decade of working. Really, everything I learned as a professional actor happened during my time on the show. It was a personal victory for me but also a professional and creative victory. It’s rare for a network show to have 100 episodes, let alone 200.”

With his signature look at the closing door of Reagan’s office, Detective Baker became a main character in one of TV’s most successful police procedural shows. Hawk has expertly portrayed the detective’s stare and stern yet strong demeanor for a decade and a half. And it seems like she learned how to do this while working alongside some of the best in the business.

She benefited from working with Tom Selleck

“Oh my God, there are so many. I would say probably my favorite episode is season 4, the episode directed by Donnie Wahlberg called Manhattan Queens,” Hawk said. “I took out the Chief of Police of Suffolk, who was questioning me in a room full of men. I just completely cut him down to size with a singular phrase, and it’s beautiful. I loved that whole scene because Baker was so tough and her dialogue delivery… I mean, I aspired to be as cool and effortless as her.”

Hawk spent several years portraying the character as the only woman in the inner circle of the upper echelons of the New York City Police Department. Although she was already a talented and capable actress, her time working alongside Tom Selleck and others on the long-running series made her a force of nature. There are dozens of great actors in “Blue Bloods,” but none rose to prominence as quickly as Abigail Hawk.
