Blue Bloods: Find out which stars want to rejoin the show

Blue Bloods is an attractive property. The show has had steady ratings for 13 years and was renewed by CBS for another season. It provided stars like Donnie Wahlberg and Bridget Moynahan with career-defining roles and served as a fulcrum for the late legendary Tom Selleck’s career. Is it any wonder why anyone would want to join the cast?

We’ve talked about actors who were hesitant to join the show or who almost turned down their career-defining role, but Nicholas Turturro is the rare actor who wanted to return to the show despite the fact that the character His has not been seen in many years. Let’s unpack what happened.

What happened to Renzulli on Blue Bloods?

Turturro first appeared in Blue Bloods in the show’s first episode. He plays Anthony Renzulli, the NYPD Sergeant who trained Jamie Reagan (Will Estes) and his late brother Joe Reagan. Renzulli is an experienced police officer known for his keen eye and ability to hone in on details that others would miss. He was never the star of a given episode, but he was a reliable presence during the show’s first six seasons.

Then, suddenly, he disappeared. Renzulli does not appear beyond the episode “Cursed”, despite being alive and presumably a Sergeant in the same area. What happened? Well, some fans attributed his absence to the fact that he “served his purpose” in the show’s grand scene, but we never really understood the reason. Neither Turturro nor CBS executives would talk about why Renzulli has been MIA for the past six seasons.

That said, Turturro is ready to return. He lobbied for Renzulli to return and possibly even lead his own spinoff show in 2013. “Write to CBS and Blue Bloods that we need more Renzulli,” he tweeted. “Maybe he needs a spin-off, wouldn’t that be a good idea.”

Unfortunately, the campaign did not yield many results. A 2022 Reddit thread has reignited interest in the character, but based on the time that has passed and the number of characters the show is currently focusing on, it’s unlikely they’ll bring Renzulli back. He will likely remain a relic of the show’s early years.
