It’s always a bit nostalgic when a few co-stars from an old show get back together for another project – but sometimes, it’s one of the actors who doesn’t want to invite their old friend over.
Reunions between co-stars are beautiful and exciting for both fans and the actors themselves – especially, if they remained good friends after the previous project.
This was certainly the case for Tom Selleck and Larry Manetti, who starred together in the hit ’80s series Magnum P.I.
“Fans have been looking forward to their Blue Bloods reunion since Selleck landed the gig in 2010, but years passed and it didn’t happen.”
This is quite confusing considering Tom Selleck’s importance in Blue Bloods and his character status.
His Frank Reagan was the Commissioner, and introducing another seasoned detective or public servant for Larry Manetti to star alongside his old friend for a few episodes would have been a no-brainer.
Recently, Manetti finally appeared in Blue Bloods – season 13, episode 18 to be exact. While filming the episode, the actor revealed the real reason it took him so many years to jump on board. Blue Bloods ship.
Apparently, it was Tom Selleck who vetoed Larry appearing on the show!
“Tom didn’t want to put me on the show because he thought it would confuse the audience because of ‘Magnum,’” Manetti explained in an interview with TV Insider.
At some point, however, Selleck changed his mind after perhaps realizing that the Blue Bloods were too established to lose anything due to Manetti’s presence.
A year before his co-star’s long-awaited appearance on the show, Tom Selleck told producers to find a way to make their reunion finally happen.
Sure enough, after all these years, Magnum P.I. co-stars reunited for Blue Bloods, but there’s a catch: Selleck and Manetti didn’t share a single scene in that episode.
This, again, is due to actor Frank Reagan’s discretion: Manetti confirmed that the only reason his character did not deal with the Commissioner was to avoid such an obvious wink to the audience. fake of Magnum P.I..
Despite concerns regarding Tom Selleck’s show, it didn’t affect his off-screen relationship with Larry Manetti at all.
The two actors have been close friends for nearly 45 years, and now they feel more like brothers, Manetti shared.
Off set, the two hung out together every night while filming the episode together, so it’s safe to say that their backstage reunion was much warmer than their onscreen reunion.
