After the first season of Donnie Loves Jenny wrapped, newlyweds Donnie Wahlberg and Jenny McCarthy were overwhelmed by the positive response from viewers.

The two felt like they had accomplished their goal of showing people what true love looks like. “I’ve never seen so many #love or #relationshipgoals,” McCarthy tells PEOPLE.

Well, get your hashtags ready, because the couple is back to bring the love and chaos in the second season of Donnie Loves Jenny.

Wahlberg embarks on a nationwide tour with his band, New Kids on the Block, while McCarthy stays home in Illinois to help move their family into a new house.

And while having your husband leave on tour might strain some marriages, this couple tells PEOPLE it only brought them closer.

“You know we did an awesome job pre-planning how we were going to see each other. We really made it work,” says McCarthy, 42.

The two carefully arranged their schedules to make sure that they could spend as many nights together as possible. McCarthy moved her SiruisXM radio show, Dirty, Sexy, Funny around the county following the tour to make seeing her husband easier. When she wasn’t close to him, he would fly home to spend the night with her.

“It just occurred to me the other day that I spent one night in one hotel the entire tour,” recalls Wahlberg, 45.

During a concert in his hometown of Boston, Wahlberg experienced what he calls “the greatest night of my performing career.” His son Elijah, 13, played the drums in one song, he got to make out with his wife during the show, he dedicated a song to his mother and his stepson Evan, 13, joined him onstage for the confetti finale.

Despite their eventful careers, the spouses insist their life together is pretty average – goldfish funerals, ’80s disco birthday parties, running a multi-city hamburger chain with Mark Wahlberg and raising chickens in their backyard … you know, “typical stuff.”

Season 2 of Donnie Loves Jenny premieres Wednesday at 10 p.m. ET on A&E.
