Donnie Wahlberg Break His Silence After CBS’ Decision To Cancel ‘Blue Bloods’

On Tuesday, Donnie and his co-star Bridget Moynahan visited The Drew Barrymore Show to discuss the remaining episodes of Blue Bloods.

The show first premiered in 2010 and follows the Reagans, a family of law enforcement officials in New York City.

Donnie plays Detective Danny Reagan, while Bridget portrays his sister Erin, a bureau chief in the District Attorney’s Office.

Though the show was canceled a few months ago, the cast members are still coming to terms with the beloved drama soon coming to an end.

Drew Barrymore asked the stars about it all during their recent appearance on her talk show.

“I think everybody’s really upset and sad, but also happy and satiated,” the host asked them.

“More upset and sad, more upset and sad,” Donnie quickly admitted.

Sitting next to him, Bridget could be heard agreeing with her co-star.

The final season has been split into two parts – with the Part 1 finale airing on May 17 and the last batch of episodes to begin airing on CBS in the fall.

Talk show co-host Ross Mathews asked the actors to elaborate on what emotions they’re dealing with while “saying goodbye to these characters” after almost 15 years.

Drew added that it seemed the Blue Bloods cast members were almost like a family in real life, instead of only onscreen.

“I think it’s more saying goodbye to the people behind the characters,” Bridget shared. “We’ve created such a family on set with each other and the crew.”

“Most of the crew’s been with us for 14 years, so we’ve been through a lot of weddings, births, deaths, and everything,” she added. “We’ve been through it all with each other.”

FAN OUTCRY

The stars of the show aren’t the only ones not quite ready to let go.

Fans are begging CBS to change its mind and reverse the cancellation and film another season of Blue Bloods.

“I know all good things must come to an end, just not yet, please,” wrote one upset fan on an online forum.

“Looks like the entire cast wants more,” a second fan said another.

“I hope CBS reconsiders and gives them a full season,” the user added. Tom [Selleck], who plays Commissioner Frank Reagan] is willing to do anything.”

This fan appeared to be referencing a recent USA Today interview with Tom, who is also an executive producer on the drama.

DISAPPOINTED STARS

The outlet reported that he didn’t want to discuss much about having to say goodbye to the show.

Instead, he spoke about wanting the show to continue on past its 14th season, despite its cancellation.

“They say it’s an eight-episode wind-down, and I say, ‘We’ll see,’” Tom said.

“Look, I’ll do whatever is best for the whole situation, but I love this show, obviously,” he added. “And I think CBS is going to end up being very conflicted with their present plans.”

The actor said he knows there are “a lot of very upset people out there” and that he and everyone else will just have to “see what happens.

Blue Bloods airs on CBS on Fridays at 10 pm.

CBS canceled Blue Bloods in November

Donnie Wahlberg has teased the idea of bringing Blue Bloods back to life in the shape of a spin-off with its end now in sight.

Blue Bloods season 14 made its debut on Friday, February 16, on CBS, with its return bittersweet for fans following the announcement it would be its last series in 2023.

Nevertheless, once again, the Reagan family is back on the small screen, gathering together every week for their Sunday night dinners which the drama has become known for.

Following the series debut, Donnie Wahlberg, who has played Detective Danny Reagan from the very beginning, appeared on The Kelly Clarkson Show to discuss the end of an era.

It was during his conversation with the singer-turned-chat show host that the 54-year-old spoke of his wish for the series.

Wahlberg commented: “It’s an incredible blessing, I’m going to miss it [Blue Bloods].

“I’m still in denial. I’m very much a present moment person and until it’s gone, it’s not going away as far as I’m concerned.

“And maybe there’s still some way that it’ll end up surviving and carrying on in a different way.”

But two years ago, showrunner Kevin Wade shut down the idea of a Blue Bloods spin-off, explaining why it wouldn’t work for Pop Culture.

He referred to other big police procedural shows such as NCIS and FBI, with both of them now having two spin-offs each while Blue Bloods has none.

Wade said: “Blue Bloods was never about the initials, whether it was CSI or NCIS or FBI, it just isn’t, it’s about the family,”

“You can’t replicate the family. You could take the idea of a law enforcement family in another city, obviously, but Blue Bloods is kind of a one-off, starting with Tom Selleck and [Donnie Wahlberg] and [Bridget Moynahan].

“The show is identified, I think, way more with the actors than with the organizations they work for.”

But he did go on to say that if there was ever a spin-off which would focus on just one or two family members, it would happen once the original drama came to an end.

Wade added: “That will be when the show ends one day, if somebody has an idea to take a couple of the characters and put them in a new situation, that would be great. But that’s in an unforeseeable future.”

So with Blue Bloods officially ending in the first half of 2024, could it be that a spin-off actually might be in the works?

Blue Bloods season 14 continues every Friday on CBS.
