I’m Worried Captain Sandy Yawn Might Quit After Below Deck Mediterranean Season 9

Captain Sandy Yawn might be considering leaving the show after this tough charter season ends.
Her recent marriage to Leah Shafer is a highlight of the current season of Below Deck Mediterranean.
Sandy’s more hands-off approach this season may indicate she’s ready for a new chapter in her life.

Below Deck Mediterranean season 9’s Captain Sandy Yawn has been having a tough charter season, and though she’s tough in a storm, I’m worried she might quit after this season’s end. Captain Sandy has been part of the Below Deck franchise for years, joining in for Below Deck Mediterranean season 2 in place of the original Captain on the series, Mark Howard. With years of experience under her belt, Captain Sandy proved that she was the best person for the job after facing a tough charter season and continuing to prevail. Now, she’s been part of the franchise for years.

Captain Sandy can be a polarizing figure among Below Deck viewers, though I believe she sometimes gets treated a bit harshly because she’s the only woman in a sea of male captains. Sandy has been working her whole life to become the Captain of her own charters, and she has a wonderful sense of what the crew she’s working with needs. Though the crew’s stability is only one of many jobs she takes on as Captain, Sandy is great with the people she works with, even if they don’t always agree with her decisions. I’m worried we’re losing Captain Sandy.

Captain Sandy Recently Got Married

While Captain Sandy was quiet about her love life in earlier seasons of Below Deck Mediterranean, she’s opened up about herself in a personal way that will be featured on the current season of the series. Captain Sandy recently married Leah Shafer, a gospel singer and content creator, which she shared on Instagram and documented on various social media platforms. Captain Sandy’s life is changing, and the early days of marriage have been exciting for the superyacht captain.

While Captain Sandy and Leah married in May 2024, the story of their engagement will be featured on an upcoming episode of Below Deck Mediterranean season 9. With Captain Sandy having shared that she never thought she’d find someone who she wanted to be with forever, the sweet story will involve the rest of the Captain’s crew. While I’m thrilled for Captain Sandy, her marriage could mean the end of her time on Below Deck Mediterranean.

Captain Sandy Might Want To Settle Down Soon

She’s Looking Forward To A Life With Leah

After finally marrying the love of her life, Captain Sandy may want to finally settle down and be in one place with her new wife. Although she’s used to living like more of a nomad, traveling from charter to charter on different superyachts throughout the year, Captain Sandy may be ready to stay still. Though she’s been working in the industry for decades, the captain could be preparing to shift gears.

Throughout her time on Below Deck Mediterranean, Sandy has been open about her journey with sobriety and shared that there have been some times that are more difficult than others. Opening up further when she released her book in 2023, Sandy recounted some of the most harrowing moments of her life, sharing how her work has saved her countless times. If Sandy wants to settle down, I think she may move into work surrounding addiction and rehabilitation.

Captain Sandy & Her Wife Live In Colorado During The Off Season

While Captain Sandy has been living more of a nomadic lifestyle in the years she’s worked aboard superyachts, Leah wanted their home base to be in Colorado. Captain Sandy explained that though she would’ve preferred somewhere closer to water, she was happy to make a compromise. Since her work took her closer to the water, Sandy agreed to Colorado, and they’ve enjoyed plating their roots in the state.

Though Captain Sandy agreed to the living situation, it may not be the most ideal to keep her returning to Below Deck Mediterannean. With Captain Sandy living in a landlocked state, her time close to the water is likely going to be limited to her charter seasons in the Mediterranean. Despite knowing Captain Sandy enjoys the open water, she may be more hesitant to return after adjusting to Colorado.

Captain Sandy Does Seem Less Involved This Season

She’s More Hands-Off Than Before

Captain Sandy’s involvement in the difficulties of her Below Deck Mediterranean season 9 crew has been surprisingly limited, leaving me wondering if there’s something bigger going on this season. Sandy’s mind may have been more focused on Leah joining in on the charter and the proposal she was planning for her trip, but it’s been noticeable that the Captain isn’t as present this season. With the level of drama, I’ve found it surprising.

Typically, Captain Sandy struggles with keeping herself away from the crew drama, even if it’s just a minimal understanding of what’s happening in the interior and exterior teams. With her team leads taking care of the troubles between crew members, Captan Sandy has only had to step in once this season of Below Deck Mediterranean. Even though that may be a positive, I believe it’s a sign that Captan Sandy could be interested in leaving the show behind for a new life.

Below Deck Mediterranean airs Mondays at 9 p.m. EDT on Bravo.
