How Will Trent Season 2’s New Character Affect Titular Special Agent Teased By EPs

Will Trent executive producers Liz Heldens and Daniel Thomsen tease how season 2’s new character will impact the titular agent in the newest episodes.

Will Trent executive producers Liz Heldens and Daniel Thomsen open up about how a new character introduced in season 2 will impact the titular agent. In the latest episode of the police procedural, James Ulster revealed that Lucy Morales’ brother, Antonio Miranda, was Will’s only living relative. The titular Special Agent begins a case file on his uncle, wanting to learn more about his past.

Speaking with TVLine, Heldens and Thomsen explained that Will Trent season 2 will reveal more about Antonio and his importance in Will’s life. They also emphasized how interesting it would be for him to have a male figure in his life, since the agent is usually surrounded by women. Check out what Heldens and Thomsen had to say below:

Liz Heldens: By around Episode 4, he’s kind of like, ‘Enough, I think I just have to reach out.’ It’s something that he’s very nervous about, in a way that we find very endearing…. He needs to reach out to this man, and it’s very exciting because Will is [typically] surrounded by women. That’s what [Will Trent novelist] Karin Slaughter created. That was her intention, and it has made this character so interesting. I think a lot of women connect to Will because he is surrounded by women, he listens to women, and he really respects women. But it’s fun, as we’re writing toward the end of the season, to ask ourselves what it looks like when Will has a really charismatic, male role model. What does that feel like with someone who is different from him? That relationship is going to be very emotional… and awkward.

Daniel Thomsen: Season 2 is going to be about his exploration with his uncle, and we’re not going to turn back to Ulster in this [10-episode] chapter.

Will Trent Has Always Been Searching For Answers About His Family

Will’s major motivation for his job in season 1 was uncovering the truth behind the murder of Lucy, his mother. While the season ended with James behind bars for both her murder and the deaths of others, season 2 sees him claiming to be the titular character’s father. Not only is there no concrete basis for this so far, but he is seemingly involved with a new case being investigated in season 2.

Will Trent’s season 2 premiere ended with a new character, Cricket, being killed in an explosion, something the agent is clearly unprepared to deal with. This emphasizes how important the people close to him are, and why he’s still searching for answers about his family lineage all these years later. It’s why, when he finally does make contact with Antonio, he will no doubt become an important figure in his life right away.

However, with the focus shifting off James’ role in Will’s family for now, it seems the idea of his real parentage won’t be revealed until a possible Will Trent season 3. This will give him time to develop a relationship with his uncle before digging even deeper into his past. With many more twists and turns regarding his story yet to come, it seems season 2 will be laying the foundation for a much larger exploration of his backstory later on.
