Star of ‘Will Trent’ talks about premiere of season two

The Georgia-based ABC crime series “Will Trent” begins its season Tuesday night at 8 p.m.. Georgia Bureau of Investigation Special Agent “Will Trent” uses quirky and unconventional methods to solve cases.

Trent is played by actor Ramon Rodriguez. When he heard the news the series would be renewed for another year, Rodriguez said he got to work.

I immediately started like my wheels started turning creative. I was like, okay. Got on the phone with the creators and the writers. I was like, what are we doing? What do we think and where are we taking it? Because I felt like we left off on a really great point, you know, starting to finally understand who this guy is. I mean, it’s a unique show … we get to follow this unique character who’s got a unique point of view on the world and how he sort of looks at crime. And then you have all of these other really interesting characters and how they interact,” said Rodriguez.

From past episodes, viewers have learned Rodriguez’s character is an orphan and raised in foster homes. Now, in season two, his past starts to come to light. “You know, we learn he has an uncle. And so, there are things that we’re going to start diving into. I think, you know, it’s a cool concept of identity, which is something that we talked about early on. So now, we get some clues as to who this guy is. How can we dive deeper into that and what comes up when you do that,” said Rodriguez.

Many scenes in the series are shot in Metro Atlanta, but could the show ever take a road trip to Savannah, Georgia? Chef and restaurant owner Chaz Ortiz hopes so by appealing to Rodriguez’s Puerto Rican heritage through food. Ortiz, who is also Puerto Rican, owns a popular restaurant called Chazito’s Latin Cuisine. “I definitely would take him straight to the island without hopping on the plane,” said Ortiz as he prepared a mofongo a Latin dish. When asked what he wants to see in next season, Ortiz said, “hoping to see a little bit more action from him. I love the action in the field. I like when he gets down and dirty, you know.”

Rodriguez responded to Ortiz’s invitation to travel for a homecooked meal with a good-natured laugh and said, “I would love that. I’ve been dying to go there. But I hear it’s an amazing town.”

He went on to hint what’s in store for the next episodes. “We’re going to start continue peeling back, you know, on Will. Who is this guy because you just started to figure out a little bit about him. So, if you get to season one and so we’re going to start sort of exploring, you know, heritage, who he is fam, does he have family? We get some clues as to who this guy is. How can we dive deeper into that and what comes up when you do that? We understood some of the trauma that he went through as a child being an orphan and growing up in the foster care system.”

Threads of what the series will contain from actors excited about season two. “It’s the first time I’ve had a show go from season one to season two. So I was pretty thrilled and excited to be able to go back, dive back into this show and these characters and just problem solve and figure out how do we keep elevating and how do we make it better,” said Rodríguez
