Below Deck Med: Signs Captain Sandy Won’t Fire Chef Johnathan Despite Allegations Of Poor Performance

Despite his polarizing personality, Captain Sandy Yawn may keep Johnathan “Jono” Shillingford on board as a chef on Below Deck Mediterranean. The Bravo show is known for featuring a few dramatic crew members every season. This year, the drama queen label goes to Jono, who has stunned everyone on Mustique with his flashy attitude and odd cooking choices. Jono almost ruined entire charters with his below-average cooking skills and subpar dishes. He tried his best but couldn’t impress the charter guests or his teammates. Jono disappointed Sandy the most because she was responsible for allowing him on her ship.

Over the months, Chef Jono has shown red flags that make him a weak link in the team. He made controversial decisions, such as serving guests dry chicken, which didn’t go over well. In one episode, Jono’s lack of professionalism was evident when he failed to prepare late-night snacks. When Elena Dubaich asked him to make some for the guests, he refused, letting her deal with the situation alone. Jono made many mistakes, like preparing late breakfasts and disrespecting the stews. His poor performance has convinced Below Deck Med viewers that he won’t be on the boat for much longer.

Chef Johnathan Has Been Improving

Johnathan Has Realized He Made Some Mistakes

It appears that Chef Jono may not make it through the entire season, yet there are hints that Captain Sandy won’t fire him.

Chef Jono has been putting extra effort into improving his culinary skills and behavior. Unlike some former Below Deck franchise cast members, such as Natalya Scudder, who refused to change their ways and eventually departed, Chef Jono is taking feedback positively and working on his mistakes. His actions prove that he’s dedicated to his job. A few weeks ago, Jono shared a video on Instagram acknowledging his mistakes.

Chef Jono will probably remain on the boat until the end of the season because Captain Sandy doesn’t dismiss people hastily. She prefers to assess the performance of her crew members and consider her options before letting anyone go. Sandy also believes in giving people opportunities to show their worth. In the past, Captain Sandy had issues with Kyle Viljoen and Tumi Mhlongo for spreading negativity, but she kept them on board because of their strong work ethics.

Chef Jono shouldn’t be concerned as long as he continues to perform well.

Chef Jono refused to cook a snack in the middle of the night. However, apart from that incident, he has tried to be part of the team as much as possible. Jono has built a close relationship with everyone on the boat, from Aesha Scott to Captain Sandy. He has also stayed out of major controversies or love triangles, making himself look one of a kind. Most other cast members have a decent friendship with Chef Jono. He’s a team player, which is a big reason Captain Sandy won’t fire him from Below Deck Mediterranean season 9.
